Lux Radio Theater – War of the Worlds {Dana Andrews, Pat Crowley}

Lux Radio Theatre presents H.G. Wells’ THE WAR OF THE WORLDS, starring Dana Andrews and Pat Crowley.

Something has fallen from the sky.

At first, it appears to be little more than a strange meteorite. Then the object opens — and humanity discovers that Earth is no longer alone.

Dana Andrews stars as scientist Clayton Forrester, with Pat Crowley as Sylvia Van Buren, in Lux Radio Theatre’s dramatic adaptation of The War of the Worlds, originally broadcast February 8, 1955.

Unlike Orson Welles’ famous 1938 Mercury Theatre broadcast, this production adapts the story through the world of the 1953 motion picture, giving listeners a very different version of the Martian invasion: scientists, military forces and terrified civilians confronting an enemy whose technology appears almost impossible to defeat.

It is one of the fascinating pleasures of old-time radio: the same H.G. Wells story that helped create one of broadcasting’s greatest legends returned years later as a polished Hollywood radio production.

And on B4TV, that makes this episode a perfect crossover between two parts of our universe — the prestige storytelling of Lux Radio Theatre and the fantastic worlds explored on Worlds Beyond Wednesday.

One planet. One invasion. One classic story told through the imagination of radio.
