The Shadow – Episode 001: The Death House Rescue

The Shadow returns to the airwaves with “The Death House Rescue,” the chilling first episode of the classic 1937 radio drama series starring Orson Welles as Lamont Cranston and Agnes Moorehead as Margo Lane.

When an innocent man faces execution for a murder he insists he did not commit, Lamont Cranston steps into the darkness to uncover the truth. But this is no ordinary detective story. This is the world of The Shadow — where crime, fear, mystery, and the unseen hand of justice meet in one of old time radio’s most unforgettable creations.

Originally broadcast on September 26, 1937, “The Death House Rescue” helped launch the version of The Shadow that generations of radio listeners would come to know: a mysterious crimefighter with the eerie power to cloud men’s minds, moving unseen through the night while criminals learned to fear the sound of that unforgettable laugh.

Before comic book heroes dominated American pop culture, The Shadow stood at the crossroads of pulp magazines, radio mystery, crime drama, and supernatural suspense. This episode captures the atmosphere that made the series legendary — condemned men, hidden guilt, desperate last chances, and justice arriving from somewhere no criminal can see.
