Boston Blackie // Episode 01: The Jonathan Diamond // OTR Classic Radio Crime

🎙️💎 Smart, smooth, and always in trouble, Boston Blackie is classic old time radio crime with style, speed, and a grin on its face. Blackie isn’t your usual square-jawed detective — he’s a reformed crook who knows how criminals think, which makes him dangerous to the bad guys and deeply irritating to the cops trying to keep up with him. That mix of mystery, charm, and wisecracking confidence helped make the show one of radio’s most memorable crime titles.

The show began on NBC in 1944 with film star Chester Morris carrying over his Blackie role from the movies, then found its longer life in the 1945–1950 syndicated run produced by Frederick Ziv, where Richard Kollmar became the best-remembered radio Blackie. Along the way, listeners got a steady supporting cast built around Mary Wesley and the forever-frustrated Inspector Farraday, giving the series a fun balance of crime, light comedy, and character chemistry.

If you love classic radio detective shows, vintage crime drama, and heroes who work the edge between respectable and rogue, Boston Blackie is a must-hear. It has murder cases, stolen jewels, setups, double-crosses, and a lead who feels more like a charming outlaw than a polished lawman — which is exactly why the thing still pops. Think of it as old time radio crime with a little swagger in its pocket.
