The Six Shooter | Ep. 06 – Rink Larkin | Old Time Radio

James Stewart stars in The Six Shooter, one of radio’s finest adult Western dramas.

Stewart plays Britt Ponset, a quiet, wandering cowboy who rides from town to town across the fading American frontier. Britt isn’t looking for trouble, but trouble has a way of finding him — whether it involves murder, revenge, greed, frightened townspeople, old friends, or ordinary people forced into extraordinary circumstances.

Created by Frank Burt, The Six Shooter became a regular NBC series in September 1953 and ran through 1954. The program blended traditional Western adventure with unusually thoughtful storytelling, strong characterization, humor, and a reflective tone that allowed James Stewart to bring much more to Britt Ponset than the typical radio gunfighter.

At the center of it all is Britt: a decent man with a six-gun, a horse named Scar, and no particular place he needs to be next.

The series stands alongside programs such as Gunsmoke as part of radio’s move toward a more mature kind of Western — stories where the people, moral choices, and consequences often matter as much as the gunfire.

On B4TV, The Six Shooter rides as part of Western Saturday, our weekly celebration of frontier adventure and classic radio Westerns.
